Robert Mueller Municipal Airport Redevelopment, Austin, TX
Located on a decommissioned 700-acre airport site in the central city, this mixed-use urban infill community is adding 10,000 jobs and 10,000 residents to a part of Austin that has long experienced disinvestment and deterioration. In addition to its contribution to the economic development of East Austin, the community design features five miles of urban greenways and trails, a significant component of affordable housing, a network of walkable streets; provision for urban rail transit, regional water quality and detention; and a landmark program of green building. Mueller was awarded a Silver rating in USGBC’s LEED-ND pilot program for neighborhood design, and has been the recipient of many design awards, including a Charter Award of Excellence from the Congress for the New Urbanism. McCann Adams Studio (formerly ROMA Austin) prepared the Master Plan and continues to serve as the master plan architect for the master developer, Catellus Development Corporation.
